What is M4A?

M4A is an audio-only MPEG-4 file. The extension of MPEG-4 is MP4 which contains both the audio and video data. However, when the file only contains audio, the extension provided is called the M4A file extension. This file format is widely used to prevent unprotected music downloaded from iTunes.

Most M4A files are encoded using lossy Advanced Audio Coding which reduces the file size.

Differences between M4A and MP3 File Formats

M4A and MP3 file formats are often used interchangeably. However, there is a significant difference between the two. M4A is considered as a successor to MP3 and is capable of compressing audio files in smaller file size at the same bit rate.

As a matter of fact, M4a format files make use of 128 kbps, 192 kbps, and 256 kbps stereo bit rate. For starters, the bit rate is the amount of data that is processed per unit of time.

As far as quality is concerned, M4A files are compressed using ALAC codec which ensures the best sound quality. As far as the file size is concerned, this file format also uses a lossy algorithm which means that the larger the bit rate, the larger is the file size, and the better is the audio quality.

In an event when you want to attain the same sound quality from both the formats, you will need to achieve 256 kbps bit rate for MP3 encoding, but the same sound quality can easily be achieved at 192 kbps with M4A. Thus, for the same sound quality, the M4A files are smaller in size when compared to MP3. But as far as compatibility is concerned, MP3 is far more compatible with a range of devices and apps.

How to Open an M4A File

Although M4A files offer limited compatibility, the popular applications that it supports include iTunes, VLC, Windows Media Player, QuickTime, and Winamp.

Further, this file format is also supported by Android phones and tablets, and Apple’s iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad. Thus, you don’t need any specific application to open the file, but your device will be able to open it directly from email, drive or website.
