What is an AIFF?

Audio Interchange File format (AIFF) is an audio file format normally used to store data for personal computers and any other electronic audio device. Developed by Apple Inc. in 1988, this format is based on IFF (Electronic Arts’ Interchange File Format) which is mostly used on Amiga systems and on Apple Macintosh computer systems.

A standard AIFF format has a file extension that looks like .aiff or .aif and the compressed variants should show something like .aifc however, .aiff and .aif can also be accepted by audio applications that are compatible with this format.

The AIFF file is comprised of a variety chunks with every chunk using an ID or a FourCC for identification.

There is the common chunk, instrument chunk, name chunk, sound data chunk, comment chunk, marker chunk, ID3 chunk, author chunk, MIDI chunk, annotation chunk, application chunk, copyright chunk and the Audio recording chunk. Metadata is stored in the author, name, copyright, annotation and comment chunks.

Applications that can open AIFF files

  • AIFF and AIF files can be played using he windows media player, VILC, Apple iTunes, Media Player Classic and Apple QuickTime among other multi-format media players.
  • Apple programs and Roxio Toast can be used to open these files on Mac devices.
  • iPhones and iPads can play these file formats without having to use any app.
  • For other non apple devices, one might require a file converter if they cannot be able to natively play them.

Advantages and Disadvantages Of AIFF

AIFF files can hold ID3 metadata inside them unlike WAV and it sounds better on a big sound system than MP3. AIFF files are mostly preferred by DJs because of the high sound quality associated with it. AIFF files can be upgraded on Traxsource which is less costly and saves a lot of time to give the best. The disadvantage is that an AIFF file weighs around four times the size of MP3, they are expensive.
