What is AAC File Format?

Advanced audio coding (AAC) IS the coherent successor to MP3 at medium to high bit rates for audio coding. It is akin to an MP3 file but presents several performance improvements such as a higher coding effectiveness for stationary and transitory signals, better handling of frequencies over 16 kHz and a more simplified filterbank.

AAC’s algorithm is meant to use two primary coding strategies to considerably reduce the amount of data required to transmit high quality digital audio. It has the sampling frequencies between 8Hz to 98 kHz and any number of channels between 1 and 48. It uses the Modified Discrete Cosine Transform MDCT with an increased window length of 2,048 points.

It can encode audio with streams of multifaceted pulses and square waves when compared to Musicam or MP3 and can be animatedly switched between MDCT block lengths of 2,048 to 256 points.

AAC takes a modular approach to encoding and implementers can create profiles to identify which specific set of tools they need to use for a specific app depending on the density of the bitstream to be encoded, the preferred performance and the suitable output.

Applications That Open AAC File Format

Some of the applications used to open AAC files are VLC, iTunes, Windows media player, Media Player Classic or MPC-HC, Audials One and MPlayer among many more media players that support more than one file format.

If it’s a Linux or Window device, the FFmpeg library should first be installed to open an AAC file while these files can be imported into iTunes through the File menu. The Add to Library option can be used for Mac devices.

Most of the times, there might be confusion between AAC file extensions and other extensions that share some of the same letter as AAC. An example is AAX (Audible Enhanced Audiobook) and ACC Graphics Accounts Data. It is therefore imperative that great care is given to make sure that applications opening AAC are clearly distinguished from the rest.

Advantages of AAC Audio

Most devices today re more compatible with AAC file format. Android, Windows, modern models of Nokia and Apple iPhone and iOS based computers can play AAC and AAC+ audio files and stream them online.

AAC encoded audio files in general tend to be considerably smaller when compared to MP3 for a given sound quality level, meaning that more songs can be stored on your device if they are in this file format.

The basic AAC standardization was achieved in 1997 and this has increased the reliability of devices, players and codes which execute AAC. The compression system has also become practically omnipresent among popular technologies.

Besides offering better sound quality, having a shorter decode time, being widely available, having low streaming bandwidth and being less lossy, AAC offers a better high frequency response, wide device compatibility, large range of encoding options and supports native variable bit rate.

Disadvantages of AAC Audio

AAC files take time to encode, it utilizes high CPU during encoding, offers less hardware support, has a lot of different file extensions and involves a complicated file organization process.
